The catch at Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Cabana Bay gives a family what a Universal week needs at a moderate price, and charges no resort fee. The catches are the ones a 2,200-room resort in the southern part of Universal Orlando brings with it: extras that add up, distances measured in buses and long walks, park perks with limits, and rooms sized for value rather than space.

On our shortlists

  1. There is no resort fee, but parking, extra adults and the fun cost extra.

The rate carries no resort fee, only the 12.5% hotel tax. Self-parking is $26 plus tax per vehicle per night. Each adult beyond two in a room adds $20 a night, so four adults in a Family Suite pay $40 a night more than two. At the pools, tubes for the lazy river are sold rather than lent, and cabanas are rented by the day. Galaxy Bowl charges for its ten lanes, which must be booked; the lanes and the restaurant beside them are open from noon to 11pm. Universal Express Unlimited is not part of the stay: it comes only with rooms at Portofino Bay, Hard Rock and Royal Pacific.

What to do. Price the stay at the room rate plus tax, and add $26 a night only if you bring a car: the free buses and the walking path cover Universal without one. Book Galaxy Bowl lanes on Resy before the evening you want them rather than turning up.

  2. Every park day starts with a bus or a walk of 22 to 26 minutes.

No water taxi calls at Cabana Bay. Free buses leave the stop by the lobby about every 15 minutes for CityWalk, a short walk from the gates of Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, and for Epic Universe; Universal times the ride at 10 to 20 minutes. On foot, the path reaches the Islands of Adventure gate in 22 minutes and Universal Studios Florida's in 26. This is also a 2,200-room resort on a long site, and rooms in the far wings are a long walk from the lobby, the food court and the bus stop. Disney is a drive: with clear roads, which means off-peak, Magic Kingdom's Transportation and Ticket Center and Hollywood Studios are 23 minutes away, Epcot 24 and Animal Kingdom 28.

What to do. Ask for the Castaway wing, beside the lobby building and nearest the bus stop and the path. On early-entry mornings the buses start about an hour before Early Park Admission, so catch one of the first.

  3. Early entry covers select rides at the parks Universal names, and Volcano Bay is shut until April 2027.

With a valid park ticket and the room key, Early Park Admission opens select attractions up to an hour before regular opening, at the parks Universal names for each season. From 5 October to 30 November 2026 those are Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe; Universal Studios Florida has no dates listed. Some park tickets carry the same benefit, so the early crowd is not only hotel guests, and Universal does not guarantee it. Volcano Bay, the water park behind the south towers with its own path from the resort, is closed from 26 October 2026 to on or before 1 April 2027, and the path closes with it. The closure is the water park's, not the resort's own pools and lazy river.

What to do. Plan early starts around Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, and check Universal's Early Park Admission calendar for your dates. For a winter stay, skip the Volcano Bay View rooms, which cost $46 a night more than a Standard Room on a February Tuesday for a view of a closed park.

  4. The rooms are sized for value: 300 sq ft for four, or one bathroom for six.

The Standard Room is 300 sq ft (28 m²) with two queen beds for up to four, a vanity outside the bathroom, a small table for two and no microwave. The Family Suite is 430 sq ft (40 m²) for up to six: two queen beds behind a sliding partition, a full-size sofa bed in the living room and a kitchenette. It has one bathroom, split into a bath-and-shower room, a vanity and a separate toilet so that three can get ready at once, and once the sofa bed is open the living room is gone. Families with teenagers, and five adults sharing, find it tight, with little storage.

What to do. Five or six adults should look at the Volcano Bay View 2-Bedroom Suite instead: 772 sq ft (72 m²) with a second bathroom, for up to eight, from $522 on a February Tuesday, though in winter its view is of a closed park. There are only 20 of them.

  5. Christmas, Presidents' Day week and Easter cost far more than January.

Mid-December and January are the cheapest weeks: a Standard Room was $150 to $162 a night on Tuesdays then, before tax, against $181 on Tuesday 2 February 2027. Christmas to New Year and Presidents' Day week run 55 to 75 per cent above early February, at $285 on 29 December and $311 on 16 February. Nights in the Easter holidays run 20 to 90 per cent above, from $223 at the end of March to $338 on 1 April, and March Tuesdays were $223 to $246. The Family Suite Exterior Entry follows the same curve, from $203 in mid-December to $427 in the Easter holidays.

What to do. If the dates are free, come between mid-December and the end of January, avoiding the nights between Christmas and New Year. Summer is not dear here: Tuesdays from May to September were $180 to $218.

Who should skip it

Couples after a quiet break, because this is a 2,200-room family resort built around pools, a bowling alley and an arcade. Anyone who wants to walk out of the lobby and into a park within ten minutes, or to arrive by boat. A Disney-first holiday, with the Disney parks 23 to 28 minutes away by car with clear roads. Five adults hoping to share one Family Suite, which has one bathroom.

Who should book it anyway

Families doing Universal on a budget. A Family Suite sleeps six with a kitchenette and a bathroom that three can use at once, for $278 on a February Tuesday against $181 for a Standard Room, and no resort fee lands on top. The buses run about every 15 minutes to CityWalk and Epic Universe, early entry opens select rides up to an hour before regular opening at Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, and the afternoons have a lazy river, a sand-beach pool with a slide off a retro dive tower and ten lanes of bowling upstairs. Book the Family Suite Exterior Entry and let the pools fill the gaps between park days.
