The catch at Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel
Helios Grand is built around one thing, the gate off the lobby into Epic Universe, and almost every catch follows from it. Five things stand between the park view and the stay: the size of the rooms, the park benefits the room does not include, the bus to Universal's other parks, the drive to Walt Disney World and the weeks that cost most. None of them is hidden, and none outweighs the gate on a trip built around Epic Universe.
On our shortlists
The rooms are small for the money, and a fifth guest sleeps on a rollaway.
The entry Standard 2 Queen Beds room is 325 sq ft (30 m²) with two queen beds, and it cost $582 a night before tax on Tuesday 2 February 2027. Four people fill its beds. A fifth needs a rollaway at $35 a night plus tax, one per room, first come, first served, and not in every room type, and each adult beyond two adds a nightly charge. The Park View 2 Queen Beds room is the same 325 sq ft for $785. The first room with more floor is the Deluxe 2 Queen Beds, 415 sq ft (39 m²) with a small sleeper sofa, from $884, and the How To Train Your Dragon Kids' Suite, 545 sq ft (51 m²), starts at $1,106. There is no resort fee; 12.5% tax goes on every rate.
What to do. A family of five should price the Park View Deluxe 2 Queen Beds: on that February Tuesday it cost $104 more than the Park View 2 Queen Beds, added 90 sq ft and a sleeper sofa, and needed no rollaway. Pack 'n Plays are free on request.
Universal Express Unlimited does not come with the room, and early entry is to select attractions only.
The hotel's park benefits are the gate off the lobby and Early Park Admission, and both need a valid theme park ticket. Early Park Admission opens up to an hour before the regular opening at Epic Universe, and at Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure as Universal decides, at select attractions in each park. Universal Express Unlimited, which uses the shorter queues at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, comes only with rooms at Loews Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific, and it is not valid at Epic Universe from any hotel. Walt Disney World's Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Hours do not apply here.
What to do. On Epic Universe days this costs nothing, because no hotel's Express works there. On days at the two original parks, use the early hour at whichever park Universal opens first and ride the busiest attractions before the queues build.
Universal's other parks are a shuttle-bus ride away, and Volcano Bay closes for the winter.
The gate opens only into Epic Universe. For Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and CityWalk, free shuttle buses run to the hub at CityWalk, about 9 minutes by road with the roads clear, and the water taxis that serve Universal's other hotels do not come here. A separate shuttle route serves Volcano Bay, Universal's water park, but it is closed for the season from 26 October 2026 and expected to reopen on or before 1 April 2027. The hotel's own pool is 8,660 sq ft and zero-entry, with underwater speakers, a hot tub, cabanas and films on the deck, but it has no slide, splash pad or lazy river: it is laid out for lounging rather than for children who want to play.
What to do. Plan a winter stay without a water park, and treat the pool as somewhere to rest between park sessions. On days at the original two parks, allow for the bus and the walk from the CityWalk hub.
Walt Disney World is 25 to 31 minutes away by car, and parking is $36 a night.
No Disney bus, boat, monorail or Skyliner reaches the hotel. With the roads clear, which in Orlando means off-peak, Disney Springs is 17 minutes away by car, the Magic Kingdom car park at the Transportation and Ticket Center 25, Epcot and Hollywood Studios 26 and Animal Kingdom 31, and traffic adds to every one of them. Overnight self-parking at the hotel is $36 plus tax a night and valet $45 plus tax, per vehicle. There is no resort fee, so for two adults with a car, parking is the one nightly charge on top of the rate and the tax. Orlando International Airport is about 22 minutes away by car with the roads clear, or about 33 from Terminal C.
What to do. Base a Disney-first holiday at a Disney hotel and keep Helios Grand for the Epic Universe nights. If a car comes along, add $36 plus tax a night to the room rate, and leave early for any Disney opening.
The week after Christmas costs about 80 per cent more than early February, and March and early April about a fifth more.
Universal prices the hotel night by night. The Standard 2 Queen Beds room was $582 on Tuesday 2 February 2027, $813 on 22 December and $1,053 on 29 December. Tuesdays from March to early April, Easter week included, ran from $663 to $714, and Thanksgiving week had no entry rooms on sale, with the Pool View from $881. Saturdays cost more than midweek: $649 on 6 February. Presidents' Day week was no dearer, at $582 on 16 February. Weeknights are usually cheapest from late October to mid-December, outside Thanksgiving week, at $499, and from July to early September, at about $460 to $500. These are rates before tax, as offered on 11 October 2026.
What to do. For the lowest rates, aim for a weeknight from late October to mid-December or from July to early September. Around Christmas and in March, price your own dates before settling on a room.
Who should skip it
Anyone whose holiday is mostly Walt Disney World, because the parks are 25 to 31 minutes away by car and none of Disney's transport reaches the hotel. Families of five or more on a standard-room budget, because the entry room is 325 sq ft and the fifth bed is a rollaway. Anyone who wants Universal Express Unlimited with the room for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, and families who want a water park in winter, when Volcano Bay is closed.
Who should book it anyway
Anyone whose trip is built around Epic Universe. The gate off the lobby is for hotel guests with a park ticket, and no other hotel has one: in at opening with Early Park Admission, back to the room for a midday rest, and in again for the evening. A Park View 2 Queen Beds room, about $200 a night more than the entry room on a February Tuesday, looks out over Celestial Park to the Cosmos Fountain, with water shows by day and the fountains and lights of Celestial Goodnight at closing time, weather permitting. Bar Helios serves cocktails on the roof over the park. Book it for the park, and take the bus to the rest.
The catch elsewhere in Orlando
- Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & SpaWalt Disney World, Magic Kingdom area
The entry Resort View rooms look over the courtyard, the marina or the pools, and like the Water View and Theme Park View rooms they are in the outer lodges, not the main building. On a Tuesday in January the lagoon view costs about $60 a night more and the Magic Kingdom view about $200 more.
- Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World ResortWalt Disney World, Magic Kingdom area
Park days run on the resort's timetable: free coaches go once an hour to each of the four Disney parks, with no monorail, Skyliner, boat or walking route, and transfers to Disney Springs or Universal cost extra. Disney gives the resort its 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry but not Extended Evening Hours.
- Universal Cabana Bay Beach ResortUniversal Orlando
Extras add up: self-parking is $26 plus tax a night, tubes for the lazy river are sold rather than lent, and Galaxy Bowl charges for its lanes, which must be booked.
- Disney's Animal Kingdom LodgeWalt Disney World, Animal Kingdom area
Disney sells the savanna only with the Savanna View rooms. The entry Resort View faces what Disney describes as rooftops or the car park, and on an early-February Tuesday the Savanna View costs $740 a night before tax against $527, $213 more.
- Disney's Yacht Club ResortWalt Disney World, Epcot area
The entry Resort View rooms look over gardens, rooftops or the car park, and guests have found theirs facing a roof or the bus stop. The Water View, over Crescent Lake or the quiet pool, cost $118 a night more on a February weeknight in 2027, and Disney sells the view over the Stormalong Bay lagoons only with Club Level.
- Loews Portofino Bay HotelUniversal Orlando
It is dear, and parking comes on top: the entry room costs about $795 a night before 12.5% tax on a February weeknight and about $1,330 between Christmas and New Year, and self-parking is $36 a night plus tax ($45 for valet).
- The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande LakesGrande Lakes
A $55 nightly resort fee and $58 a night for valet, the only parking at the Ritz, add $113 a night before tax to the room rate.
- Disney's Pop Century ResortWalt Disney World, Skyliner area
There is no table-service restaurant. The Everything POP food court, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and crowded at peak meal times, Petals Pool Bar and pizza delivered to the room are the choices on site, so order ahead in the My Disney Experience app or plan dinners in the parks.
- The Alfond InnWinter Park
The hotel runs no park shuttle and its free house cars go only around Winter Park, so the parks mean a car or a taxi, 28 to 31 minutes to Universal Studios and Epic Universe and 42 to 47 minutes to the Disney parks with the roads clear, and more at rush hour.
