What we looked for

Quiet in Fuerteventura is mostly a question of where you sleep. Corralejo, at the northern tip, is a lively town of harbour restaurants and boats to Lobos. The Jandía coast, from Esquinzo to Morro Jable, is where to go for long, calm beaches and a quieter week. Both hotels on this list are for adults 16 and over, and both keep the evening at home: dinner, a drink and bed.

Choose by distance and by what fills the day. The Elba Palace Golf Boutique Hotel is 16 minutes from the airport, inside a golf estate, with the first tee outside the door and the beach a shuttle ride away. The Royal Palm Resort & Spa is 74 minutes south, where the spa runs to more than 2,000 m² by the hotel's own measure, the indoor pool costs nothing and a guests' gate leads down to the sand.

The Elba Palace Golf Boutique Hotel is small, 62 rooms on three floors, and it stands inside the Fuerteventura Golf Club estate, with the course on every side and the centre of Caleta de Fuste about 3.5 km away. The houses around it are residential, and every guest is 16 or over, so the heated pool and the Canarian courtyard at the heart of the building stay calm all day.

The evenings are grown-up. Dinner at St. Andrews runs from 6pm to 9.30pm, in summer in the courtyard under the stars, and afterwards the Piano Bar has live music until midnight and the wine cellar pours by the glass. Beyond the hotel the estate is still; Caleta de Fuste's bars and restaurants are 9 minutes away by car when you want a livelier night.

The Royal Palm Resort & Spa is a large resort, 317 rooms and 17 suites, but it is for adults 16 and over and it sits on the Jandía coast, the stretch we suggest to couples who want peace. Its neighbours at Esquinzo are other resorts, with no restaurants or shops within a 10 minute walk of the entrance. The days run between the 941 m² Salina pool, the heated indoor pool, open to all guests at no charge from 08:00 to 20:00, and Playa de Esquinzo below the lowest terrace.

The evening is half board: the dinner buffet at Restaurant Ischia, where men wear long trousers, then a cocktail at the pool bars. Every double is 35 m² with a balcony or terrace. Morro Jable's harbour and promenade are 16 minutes away by car, so a night out is a choice rather than the background.

Is Corralejo too lively for a quiet holiday?

Corralejo is a lively town, and that is its appeal: harbour restaurants, the old town and the boats to Isla de Lobos on foot. If you want quiet evenings, stay outside it. The Royal Palm Resort & Spa, on the Jandía coast, keeps dinner and the bars inside the resort, and the Elba Palace Golf Boutique Hotel, by Caleta de Fuste, closes its day with the Piano Bar at midnight. Corralejo is then a day out, with the dunes and the Lobos boat.
