What we looked for

Fuerteventura is long and spread out, and away from the towns a hire car is close to essential. Corralejo, at the northern tip, is the clearest exception: a real town with an old harbour, restaurants, a bus station and the boats to Isla de Lobos, all within a walk. Line 6 runs to Puerto del Rosario about every half hour from Monday to Saturday, for €3.40, and line 8 to El Cotillo.

What a walk will not reach are the long dune beaches of the Grandes Playas, south of town in the Corralejo Natural Park. The town beaches are small, so plan a taxi or a hire car for a dunes day, and keep the rest of the week on foot. Choose between our two by which end of town you want: Barceló Corralejo Sands for the middle, with a big pool to come back to; Corralejo Surfing Colors Hotel & Apartments for the old town, the harbour and the surf coast at Bristol.

Barceló Corralejo Sands

Corralejo, Fuerteventura

Calle La Acacia is a side street in the middle of Corralejo, with a supermarket and the shops of Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen next door, so the everyday things are on the doorstep. The sand of Waikiki Beach, on the seafront, is a 7-minute walk. For breakfast out, New Bakery Café is 4 minutes away; for dinner, Mesón Las Tejas is 6, Jamonería Caracandado 8 and Twinny & Single Fin 10.

Breakfast is in every rate, so mornings need no planning, and the 500 m² pool makes the hotel worth coming back to in the afternoon. The ferry kiosks for Isla de Lobos are 24 minutes on foot, and Tiadhe buses run from town to Puerto del Rosario and El Cotillo. Without a car, the dunes of the Grandes Playas are 11 to 14 minutes away by taxi.

Corralejo Surfing Colors Hotel & Apartments

Corralejo, Fuerteventura

Calle Pejín is a residential street in the north-west of Corralejo, between the town and the Bristol coast, and almost everything a week needs is within a short walk. The bus station is 5 minutes away, a small sand beach by the harbour 8 and the ferry quay for Isla de Lobos 16. La Arrocería is 3 minutes along the street, and Tapas Oscar, Domenoteca, TantaLuna and La Marquesina on the harbour are 7 to 9.

The surf comes to you as well: Protest Surf Center collects pupils from the door with the board and wetsuit, and once you can surf, the Bristol reef is 20 minutes on foot. The hotel hires bicycles, and La Ola on the Bristol seafront opens at 07:00 for coffee and cakes before a session. With no restaurant for dinner, the old town is the dining room.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Fuerteventura

Where to stay in Fuerteventura without a car?

Corralejo or Caleta de Fuste. In Corralejo, Barceló Corralejo Sands and Corralejo Surfing Colors Hotel & Apartments both put the restaurants, the harbour and a beach on foot, and line 6 runs to Puerto del Rosario about every half hour from Monday to Saturday, with line 8 to El Cotillo. Caleta de Fuste is 12 minutes from the airport, with line 3 two or three times an hour. At Sotavento the Gorriones bus stop is suspended, and Betancuria needs a car from anywhere.

Can you walk to the beach from Corralejo's hotels?

To the town beaches, yes. From Barceló Corralejo Sands, Waikiki Beach, a small sandy beach on the seafront, is 7 minutes on foot; from Corralejo Surfing Colors Hotel & Apartments, a small sand beach by the harbour is 8. The long white beaches of the Grandes Playas, in the dunes south of town, are a drive: 11 to 14 minutes from Barceló and 14 from Surfing Colors. The Bristol coast, 20 minutes' walk from Surfing Colors, is a reef break for surfers, not a swimming beach.

How far is the Lobos ferry from Corralejo's hotels?

The ferry quay is 16 minutes on foot from Corralejo Surfing Colors Hotel & Apartments, and the ferry kiosks are 24 minutes on foot or 5 by car from Barceló Corralejo Sands. The return crossing costs €17 for adults, €11 for children of 4 to 11, and under-4s go free. Every visitor also needs the Cabildo's free, personal authorisation, requested at lobospass.com separately from the boat ticket, and no more than 200 people may be on the islet at once.

How do you get from Fuerteventura Airport to Corralejo without a car?

By taxi it is about €55 by day, and 36 minutes to Barceló Corralejo Sands or 38 to Corralejo Surfing Colors Hotel & Apartments with clear roads. By bus, some weekday runs of Tiadhe's line 6 call at the airport, €3.90 from there to Corralejo; otherwise take line 3 from the airport to Puerto del Rosario and change to line 6, €3.40. Drivers take cash, with no note over €50 or worth more than five times the fare, and Surfing Colors is 5 minutes on foot from Corralejo bus station.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
