A family week in Fuerteventura comes down to two kinds of base. On the Sotavento coast, south of Costa Calma, the resorts stand on their own above about nine kilometres of sand. A sandbar holds a shallow tidal lagoon that fills around each full and new moon, for a few hours around the daytime high tide, and it doubles as the teaching water of the windsurf and kite schools. Plan on a car there, since the Gorriones bus stop is suspended. In Corralejo, at the northern tip, the town beaches are small, but the restaurants, the harbour and the boats to Isla de Lobos are on foot, and the dune beaches of the Grandes Playas are a short drive.
Choose Sotavento for an all-inclusive week of pools and sand, with the lagoon as a bonus on the right dates. Choose Corralejo for a town to walk in, breakfast in every rate and days out by boat. Both of ours have a kids' club and a children's pool.
Children get their own pool with slides, a playground, a kids' club and an entertainment programme; parents get a heated saltwater pool shaped like a lake, and a tropical one too. All-inclusive is the only board, so everyday meals and snacks need no planning, and for a change there is a wood-oven trattoria and ceviches at Lemon Fish Nikkei, facing the lagoon.
Below the gardens, a ramp and steps lead down to the golden sand of Playa de la Barca. Around each full and new moon a lagoon fills behind the sandbar for a few hours around the daytime high tide, usually under a metre deep, on about half the days of the year, and the René Egli centre in the hotel's palm garden teaches windsurf and kite there to children old enough to learn. Check the centre's lagoon calendar before you pick your dates. Parking is free, and Costa Calma is 6 minutes by car.
The room to book
Suite
about 70 m²€518 a night
At 70 m², 29 m² more than the Premium Room, it adds a living room with a sofa bed and a terrace, so the children sleep in a room of their own.
A low-rise town hotel that works for children of 4 to 12, who have the Barcy Club, and for parents who want Corralejo on foot. The 500 m² main pool has a separate children's pool beside it, with sunbeds and Balinese beds around both, and the Alisios Pool Bar serves snacks from 10:00 and lunch from 13:00.
Breakfast is in every rate, with half board and all-inclusive above it. Waikiki Beach, a small sandy town beach, is 7 minutes on foot, and the boats to Isla de Lobos leave from the harbour front, where children of 4 to 11 cross for €11 return. The 156 rooms are on two floors, and the suites give a family a separate living area. For the long dune beaches, take a car or a taxi: the Grandes Playas are 11 to 14 minutes' drive.
The room to book
Suite
about 44 m²€175 a night
About 44 m² with a separate living area and a balcony or terrace, sold for up to four, and with no pool view promised, so it is the quieter choice when summer shows move to the pool bar.
Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace has welcomed families since its 2025 renovation, with cots on request, Interconnecting Doubles, four pools including a heated indoor one, and three ways down from the grounds to Playa del Matorral. With no kids' club, it suits families who like to spend the days together.
Hotel Riu Palace Jandia has its own steps down to the sand of Playa del Matorral, a children's pool, and the Suite Senior: 62 m² with two bedrooms and a sofa bed in the lounge, facing the sea. It suits families who want a calm beach week rather than a club programme.
From about €270 a night
The best things to do in Fuerteventura, hand-picked
Hand-picked: only the best, one version of each, researched so you don’t have to.
Which hotels in Fuerteventura have a kids club, and for what ages?
Of our ten, two. Barceló Corralejo Sands runs the Barcy Club for children aged 4 to 12, beside a 500 m² pool and a separate children's pool in the middle of Corralejo. Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura has a kids' club, a playground, a children's entertainment programme and a children's pool with slides; ask the hotel for the club's age range when you book.
When does the Sotavento lagoon fill?
Only around each full and new moon, for a few hours around the daytime high tide, on about half the days of the year. A sandbar 100 to 300 metres offshore holds the water back, and the lagoon is usually under a metre deep. It fills right below the gardens of Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura, and it is also the teaching water of the René Egli windsurf and kite school, so children share it with beginners on boards. René Egli publishes a lagoon calendar for each year: check it before you choose your dates, and keep a close eye on children in the water.
Where should families stay in Fuerteventura?
For young children and a week on the sand, Costa Calma and Sotavento: Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura stands on Playa de la Barca with slides, a kids' club and the tidal lagoon on the right dates, though you will need a car. For a town on foot, Corralejo: Barceló Corralejo Sands has the Barcy Club for ages 4 to 12, and the harbour, Waikiki Beach and the boats to Isla de Lobos are a walk away. Caleta de Fuste, 12 minutes from the airport, has sheltered bay beaches the tourist board pitches at families.
Can you take children to Isla de Lobos?
Yes. The boats leave from Corralejo harbour: adults pay €17 return, children of 4 to 11 €11 and under-4s travel free. Every visitor, children included, also needs the Cabildo's authorisation, which is free and personal and requested at lobospass.com, separately from the boat ticket; no more than 200 people are allowed on the islet at once, so request it before you go. From Barceló Corralejo Sands the ferry kiosks are 24 minutes on foot or 5 by car.
Do you need a car for a family holiday in Fuerteventura?
It depends on the base. At Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura, yes for anything beyond the beach: the Gorriones bus stop is suspended, parking is free, and the airport is a 64-minute drive, about €95 by taxi. At Barceló Corralejo Sands you can spend the week on foot, with Waikiki Beach 7 minutes away and the Lobos boats at the harbour; the airport is 36 minutes, about €55 by taxi, and the hotel's car park is paid.
How did you choose these hotels?
Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
