Fado & Fado is a concert, not a dinner. There is no kitchen, so nothing comes between you and the music: you take a seat a few steps from the musicians with a glass of port, moscatel or Portuguese wine (or a soft drink), and for 50 minutes a woman and a man take turns to sing, with a Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar behind them. Before each song the singers tell you, in Portuguese and in English, what the poem says, and between songs they explain where fado comes from and what the instruments do. The songs themselves are sung in Portuguese, old traditional fados and more recent ones.

There are two rooms, and you choose one when you book. The Sé room is at Largo de Santo António da Sé 5, two minutes from the door of Lisbon Cathedral, where Alfama begins. A single flight of stairs takes you down into a stone vault that, the operator says, was part of the city's medieval wall and its old sea gate, with stone it dates to the 11th century. Shows there are at 17:00, 18:30 and 20:00. The Baixa room is at Rua dos Fanqueiros 99, three minutes on foot from Praça do Comércio, on one of the grid streets rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake: a small room fitted out like an old fado tavern, with wine-red walls and guitars in gilded frames, and shows at 18:00 and 19:30. The concert and the price are the same in both, every night of the week, the operator says.

Fado is the urban song of Lisbon. UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011 as the urban popular song of Portugal, and the operator dates its first appearance to the taverns near the Lisbon docks in the 1830s. The short concert format suits a first encounter: it costs a fraction of a fado dinner, it ends in time for dinner elsewhere, and the spoken introductions mean you know what each song is about before it starts.

Doors open 30 minutes before the show and close 15 minutes after it begins, and seats are not numbered, so the earliest arrivals choose where to sit. On GetYourGuide on 7 November 2026 the price was from 15 euros, marked down from 22; the operator's own site sells the same concert at 22 euros online and 25 euros at the door.

Why this one

It is the most reviewed fado show on GetYourGuide by a distance: 4.8 from about 7,500 reviews on 7 November 2026, and it lets you choose between two rooms and five start times a night. On 7 November 2026 GetYourGuide's price, from 15 euros, was 7 euros below the operator's own online price of 22 euros. Its closest rival is Lisboa em Fado on Rua do Crucifixo in the Baixa, also 50 minutes with a glass of port: from 10.19 euros, 4.7 from about 5,800 reviews, sung without microphones and listed as wheelchair accessible. It is the cheaper choice; Fado & Fado has the better rating and the vaulted Sé room. In Alfama, Casa Lundum held 4.9 from about 1,000 reviews at 14.82 euros for an hour, and Fado in Chiado, on stage for 15 years, its listing says, held 4.6 from about 3,200 reviews at 23 euros.

If you want the long evening instead, that is a fado dinner in a casa de fado, where singers perform between courses. On GetYourGuide, Fado Show and Portuguese Dinner is 2 hours from 49.50 euros, 4.6 from about 2,300 reviews, and the Mesa de Frades fado night with dinner, in a former chapel lined with 18th-century tiles, is 2.5 hours from 60 euros, 4.3 from about 640. Booked direct, Adega Machado in Bairro Alto, open since 1937, serves a 72 euro tasting menu with fado from 20:30. To see where the music lived rather than hear it, see our Casa-Museu Amália Rodrigues in Lisbon page, the singer's house in São Bento; for a different kind of evening concert, our Candlelight concerts in Lisbon page. The 17:00 and 18:30 Sé shows also leave the rest of the evening for a late dinner in Alfama.

Good for

  • A first taste of fado, with every song explained in English before it is sung
  • Couples who want an hour of live music before dinner
  • A low-cost evening: from 15 euros with a drink included

Not for

  • Wheelchair users in the Sé room, which is down a flight of stairs; the Baixa room is accessible
  • Anyone who wants dinner with the music: there is no food, so book a casa de fado
  • Children under 6, the operator's age limit

When to go

The show is indoors, so the weather matters only on the way there and back. The table gives sunset in Lisbon and the weather at the Sé at 19:00 each month, from Open-Meteo's historical weather for 2021 to 2025.

Sunset is in Lisbon time (UTC+0 in winter, UTC+1 in summer). Temperature is the median at 19:00 at the Sé, with the coolest evening in ten after it. Rainy days is the share of days with 1 mm of rain or more, modelled from Open-Meteo history for 2021 to 2025.

A good plan for a wet evening

From October to March between a quarter and over a third of days bring at least 1 mm of rain at the Sé, and from November to February the sun has set before the 18:30 show. An indoor concert in the early evening is the easy fix. In summer, the 20:00 show at the Sé lets out around sunset, which falls between 20:31 and 21:02 from May to August.

From our Lisbon hotels

Times are routed to the Sé room, Largo de Santo António da Sé 5, where GetYourGuide puts the map pin: on foot from the six hotels within about 25 minutes' walk, and as taxi times without traffic from the rest. The Baixa room, Rua dos Fanqueiros 99, is a few streets west, nearer the river. There is no pickup. For the Sé room the operator gives trams 28 and 12 to the Sé stop; for the Baixa room, Baixa-Chiado metro (green and blue lines) 4 minutes away and Terreiro do Paço (blue line) 3 minutes.

Complaints

    The catch

    1. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early

Seats are not numbered and go in order of arrival; doors open 30 minutes before the show, the operator says.

What to do. Get there 15 to 20 minutes ahead for a seat near the singers.

    2. The doors close 15 minutes in

Nobody is let in once the show has been running for 15 minutes, the operator says, and the Sé room sits up the hill from the Baixa.

What to do. Allow time for the climb, or take tram 28 or 12 to the Sé stop.

    3. Pick the Baixa room if stairs are hard

The Sé room is below street level, down a flight of stairs; only the Baixa room is wheelchair accessible, the operator says.

What to do. Choose Baixa when you book if anyone in your group has limited mobility.

    4. Eat before or after

There is no kitchen and no food is served; the ticket covers the concert and one drink.

What to do. Book the 17:00 or 18:30 show and have dinner afterwards in Alfama or the Baixa.

    5. Stay quiet while they sing

The operator asks for no talking and no photos while someone is singing; between songs you can do both.

What to do. Save your photos for the pause between songs.
