The class runs in Homecooking Lisbon's own kitchen at Rua Aliança Operária 54-A, in Santo Amaro, the hillside between Alcântara and Belém. It is a bright room with a long wooden worktop, two ovens and a dining table at the far end, and the GetYourGuide map pin sits on this street. The operator asks guests to arrive 15 minutes early: classes start on time.
The operator says you make a whole batch from nothing, puff pastry and filling included, so everyone has tarts to eat. The class photos show the pastry rolled into a log on a floured worktop, and guests crouched at the oven door watching the tarts brown. At the end you eat them warm at the table, the Portuguese way, the operator says, with coffee or tea and a glass of port. Afterwards you get the digital recipe with the steps and the tips, so you can bake them again at home.
The context is a few streets west. The Pastéis de Belém bakery, beside the Jerónimos Monastery, says monks there sold sweet pastries after Portugal's monasteries were closed in 1834, and that it has baked its tarts to the monastery's recipe since 1837. Homecooking Lisbon is open about it: its page doubts you will beat that bakery's tart, but says you will impress people at home.
It lasts 2 hours and is taught in English. Homecooking Lisbon is a cooking school founded by a Lisbon couple, licensed by Turismo de Portugal (RNAAT 543/2021), and it also runs a 3-hour traditional Portuguese cooking class and a petiscos class. On GetYourGuide on 7 November 2026 the class cost from 55 euros, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before and a booking cut-off 6 hours ahead.
Why this one
Of the pastel de nata classes on GetYourGuide on 7 November 2026, this one had the most reviews by a long way: 4.9 from about 3,300. The next was the Pastel de Nata Masterclass at a Real Bakery, held in a working bakery downtown, rated 4.9 from about 290 reviews at 70 euros. The 2-Hour Pastel de Nata Cooking Class, which adds a second Portuguese recipe, was rated 4.7 from about 540 at 54 euros, and the other Pasteis de Nata Baking Class near Belém was 4.9 from about 230 at 65 euros. The same school's Traditional Portuguese Cooking Class, 4 courses in 3 hours with pastel de nata among them, was rated 4.9 from about 840 at 85 euros: the one to book if you want a full meal and not only dessert.
Homecooking Lisbon also sells the class on its own site at 50 euros, with a children's rate of 40 euros for ages 6 to 10, so on 7 November 2026 booking direct was 5 euros cheaper. Its own terms, though, only refund cancellations made 72 hours ahead, against 24 hours on GetYourGuide, so for a trip with plans that may move, the GetYourGuide booking is the safer one. The class pairs well with our guided Belém and Jerónimos Monastery tour (from 49.56 euros) on the same day. For tasting Lisbon rather than baking it, our food and wine walking tour of the Baixa (from 70 euros) covers more of the city's cooking.

A plan for a wet day
In the data we looked at, it rained on 33% to 38% of days in March, October, November and December, and on 1% to 2% in July and August. The class is indoors from start to finish, with hot ovens and warm tarts, so it is one of the easier ways to spend a rainy afternoon in Lisbon.
From our Lisbon hotels
Times are routed taxi times without traffic from each hotel in our Lisbon edit to Homecooking Lisbon at Rua Aliança Operária 54-A; at busy times traffic adds to them. None of our hotels is within a reasonable walk. There is no metro out here: the nearest station is Cais do Sodré (green line), where tram 18E to Cemitério Ajuda starts; Carris lists a R. Aliança Operária stop on the way out and Rio Seco in both directions. The class has no pickup.

Complaints
The catch
It is out west, not in the centre
The kitchen is in Santo Amaro, about 5 km west of Chiado and 7 to 9 minutes by taxi without traffic from our hotels. There is no metro station nearby.
What to do. Take a taxi, or tram 18E from Cais do Sodré towards Cemitério Ajuda, and plan a Belém morning around it.
Arrive 15 minutes early
The operator's terms say classes start on time and late arrivals catch up on their own. The pastry is the first job, so missing the start means missing the folding.
What to do. Allow for traffic on the riverside road and be there 15 minutes before.
It is pastry, butter and eggs
The operator says traditional Portuguese food is not vegetarian or vegan friendly, and its kitchen uses nuts, wheat, dairy and sugar.
What to do. With any allergy or diet, contact Homecooking Lisbon before you book.
Children pay less direct
The operator's own site sells places for children aged 6 to 10 at 40 euros, and serves them coffee or tea rather than port.
What to do. With young children, compare the GetYourGuide calendar with the operator's own price before you book.
It is a sweet, not a meal
Two hours ends with warm tarts and drinks, not lunch. The same school's 3-hour Traditional Portuguese Cooking Class covers 4 courses, pastel de nata included.
What to do. Eat beforehand, or book the longer class if you want a full meal.
