The Serra da Arrábida is a limestone ridge that drops straight into the Atlantic about 40 km south of Lisbon, across the Tagus. Its slopes are covered in Mediterranean scrub and woodland, and at their foot lie small coves of pale sand and clear, sheltered water. The Portuguese state made it a natural park on 28 July 1976, by Decreto-Lei 622/76, and added a marine park along the shore in 1998. Sesimbra, at the park's western end, is a fishing town under a hilltop castle; Cabo Espichel, beyond it, is the cape where the land runs out.

The operator says the day starts with pickup at your Lisbon hotel and a drive in an air-conditioned minivan over the 25 de Abril bridge. The first stop is the clifftop above Praia do Meco, on the park's western edge, then Cabo Espichel, where the pilgrimage sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo stands on the headland with a lighthouse beyond. Next is Sesimbra: a walk up to the Moorish castle, then free time for lunch, which the operator suggests should be fresh fish in the town. In the afternoon the route turns to the park's southern coast, with St. Margaret's Cave (the operator warns of moderate walking) and the harbour at Portinho da Arrábida, then follows the coast towards Setúbal and the Casa da Baía, an 18th century building with local produce and a centre about the bay's resident dolphins. Instead of Setúbal you can take free time to swim at Galapos, Galapinhos or Praia dos Coelhos.

The price, from 75 euros on GetYourGuide on 7 November 2026, covers the guide, the minivan, pickup and drop-off at your hotel, and Wi-Fi on board. Lunch is not included. The listing gives the day as 8 hours; the operator's own description elsewhere says pickup is at 09:00 or 09:30, confirmed in the 48 hours before, and you are back at about 18:30.

What the day does well is join up a coast that is awkward without a car. In our routed drive, the cliffs at Meco are 48 to 55 minutes from the hotels in our Lisbon edit with the roads clear, and the coves of Arrábida are about an hour away, along beach roads where the council of Setúbal limits private cars every bathing season.

Why this one

Of the shared Arrábida and Sesimbra day trips from Lisbon on GetYourGuide on 7 November 2026, it is the one built around the coast: Cabo Espichel, Sesimbra and a beach. It is rated 4.8 from about 270 reviews and carries GetYourGuide's Bestseller badge. Its close twin, "Lisbon: Arrábida and Sesimbra Day Trip with Wine" (4.8, about 440 reviews, from 72 euros), swaps some of that coast for a wine estate and cellar visit, so choose it if a tasting matters more than the cape. "Setúbal, Arrábida & Sesimbra Day Trip" (4.9 from about 30 reviews, from 80 euros) adds Palmela Castle. If you would rather see the same cliffs from the water, two Sesimbra-based trips are rated 4.9: the beaches and caves boat tour with snorkelling (about 270 reviews, from 50 euros) and the guided sea-kayak tour (about 1,000 reviews, from 35 euros), but you make your own way to Sesimbra.

For a day of palaces rather than beaches, our Sintra, Pena, Regaleira and Cascais day trip (from 24.20 euros) covers Pena, Quinta da Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais, rated 4.8 from about 12,600 reviews. The Algarve and Benagil day from Lisbon (4.8, about 330 reviews, from 117 euros) reaches the sea caves of the south, but it is a 12 hour day with most of it on the motorway. Arrábida is the coast you can see properly and still be back for dinner.

Good for

  • A first look at the coast south of Lisbon without hiring a car
  • Summer visitors who want a swim in a sheltered cove as part of the day
  • Anyone staying several days in Lisbon who has already done Sintra

Not for

  • Wine lovers: there is no winery or tasting; book the wine version instead
  • Travellers who cannot manage uneven paths; the operator warns of moderate walking at the cave
  • Anyone who wants a long, lazy beach day: the swim is free time, not the whole afternoon

Modelled from historical weather (Open-Meteo, ERA5) for Portinho da Arrábida at 15:00 Lisbon time. Temperature is the median, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 15:00; rain, the share of days with 1 mm or more. Sea is the median sea temperature at midday in the bay off Portinho, 2022 to 2025.

June to September: swimming season and car-free beaches

In the years we looked at, July and August were clear at 15:00 on 86 to 88% of days, at about 29°C, and almost dry. The sea in the bay stays cool all year, about 17 to 18°C in summer. Every bathing season (4 June to 15 September in 2026) the council of Setúbal's Arrábida sem Carros plan limits private cars on the beach roads to Portinho da Arrábida, Creiro and Galapos from 07:00 to 20:00, and lets public and collective transport through. A tour takes care of that for you: in summer, ask the operator how the beach stop runs.

From our Lisbon hotels

The operator collects you from your hotel in central Lisbon, which covers every hotel in our edit; the exact pickup time is confirmed in the 48 hours before. Times are routed car times without traffic from each hotel to the clifftop above Praia do Meco, the tour's first stop, across the 25 de Abril bridge. Portinho da Arrábida is 63 to 70 minutes from the same hotels. If you are staying in Alfama, where vans cannot reach every door, check the pickup point in your confirmation.

Complaints

    The catch

    1. Pack for the beach

The swim is free time at Galapos, Galapinhos or Praia dos Coelhos, and the operator asks you to bring your own swimwear and towel. The sea in the bay is cool: about 17 to 18°C at midday in summer in the years we looked at.

What to do. Wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a towel and sunscreen from June to September.

    2. Lunch is yours to choose

Lunch is not in the price. The tour stops in Sesimbra, a working fishing harbour, and the operator suggests eating fresh fish there.

What to do. Budget for a fish lunch in Sesimbra and ask the guide which restaurants are near the stop.

    3. Want wine? Book the twin

This tour has no winery or tasting. Its sister tour on GetYourGuide, Lisbon: Arrábida and Sesimbra Day Trip with Wine, includes a wine estate and cellar visit, rated 4.8 from about 440 reviews and from 72 euros on 7 November 2026.

What to do. Choose this one for Cabo Espichel and the beach, the wine version for a tasting.

    4. In summer, let the tour handle the beach roads

Every bathing season (4 June to 15 September in 2026) the council of Setúbal limits private cars on the roads to Portinho da Arrábida, Creiro and Galapos from 07:00 to 20:00, and closes them to cars once the parking is full; public and collective transport are let through.

What to do. From June to mid September, ask the operator when you book how the beach stop runs that day.

    5. Plan a full day

The listing says 8 hours. The operator's own timings are pickup at 09:00 or 09:30, confirmed in the 48 hours before, and back at about 18:30.

What to do. Keep the evening free and book dinner from about 19:30.

    6. Wear proper shoes

The operator says the walk to St. Margaret's Cave needs moderate walking, and asks everyone to wear comfortable shoes.

What to do. Wear trainers or walking sandals, not flip-flops, and carry water in summer.

    Questions people ask

Good questions about Arrábida Natural Park and Sesimbra in a day from Lisbon

How far is Arrábida from Lisbon?

About 40 to 50 km by road, across the 25 de Abril bridge. Our routed drive from central Lisbon is 48 to 55 minutes to the cliffs at Meco and 63 to 70 minutes to Portinho da Arrábida, with the roads clear.

Is a winery visit included on this Arrábida tour?

No. This tour covers Cabo Espichel, Sesimbra, the cave, Portinho and a beach or Setúbal. For a tasting, the sister tour Lisbon: Arrábida and Sesimbra Day Trip with Wine includes a wine estate and cellar visit, from 72 euros on GetYourGuide on 7 November 2026.

Can you swim on the Arrábida day trip?

Yes, in free time at Galapos, Galapinhos or Praia dos Coelhos, the operator says, instead of the stop in Setúbal. Bring swimwear and a towel; the bathing season runs from early June to mid September.

Can you drive to the Arrábida beaches in summer?

Only with limits in summer. During the bathing season (4 June to 15 September in 2026) the council of Setúbal's Arrábida sem Carros plan restricts private cars on the roads to the Arrábida beaches from 07:00 to 20:00: the Portinho, Creiro and Galapos road closes once its parking is full, while buses, taxis and collective transport are let through. Out of season the roads are open.

    Is lunch included?

No. The tour stops in Sesimbra for lunch at your own expense, and the operator suggests the town's fresh fish.

How warm is the sea at Arrábida?

Cool. In the years we looked at, the median at midday in the bay off Portinho was about 17 to 18°C from June to November and about 15°C in February and March.

    Arrábida or Sintra?

Sintra is palaces and forest; Arrábida is cliffs, coves and a fishing town. If you have one day, Sintra is the classic; if you have two, Arrábida shows a coast most visitors to Lisbon never see.

    Arrábida and the beaches

The easy way to see Lisbon's other coast: hotel pickup, the cliffs at Cabo Espichel, Sesimbra's castle and harbour, Portinho da Arrábida and time on a beach, with a guide. From 75 euros, rated 4.8 and a GetYourGuide Bestseller. Lunch is your pick in Sesimbra.
