Sintra is the day trip almost everyone takes from Lisbon, and for good reason. The hills above the town hold a run of romantic palaces and gardens that UNESCO listed as the Cultural Landscape of Sintra in 1995, and this tour puts two of the most famous, Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, into one day with the Atlantic coast. You leave from central Lisbon, where GetYourGuide's map pin for the start sits beside Rossio station, and travel out with a live guide in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian or German. The listing gives 9 hours in all.

Pena is the yellow, red and blue palace on the summit, the one on every poster of Portugal. Parques de Sintra, the public company that runs it, calls it the pinnacle of Romanticism in Portugal and the legacy of Ferdinand II, the King-Artist. Its Essential Visit ticket covers a self-guided route through the palace's New Wing, the terraces and the park around it, and entry to the palace is only at the time printed on the ticket. Quinta da Regaleira, down the hill near the old town, is a garden of grottoes, towers and tunnels around a private palace. Its most famous sight is the Initiation Well, a spiral staircase sunk nine storeys into the rock, and the listing says you descend it.

From the hills the road runs west to Cabo da Roca, which Parques de Sintra describes as the westernmost point of continental Europe: a lighthouse, a stone marker and sheer cliffs above the ocean. The day ends in Cascais, the old fishing town turned seaside resort on the line back to Lisbon, where the listing promises time by the waterfront before the drive home. The route along the coast is the part a train day cannot easily match: Sintra and Cascais are on separate railway lines from Lisbon, and Cabo da Roca lies between them.

The price is the thing to understand before you book. On 7 November 2026 the tour cost from 24.20 euros on GetYourGuide, down from 44 euros. Parques de Sintra sells the Pena Essential Visit at 20 euros for an adult, and Quinta da Regaleira's own ticket office sells adult entry at 20 euros, so the cheapest option cannot include both tickets. GetYourGuide lists a private option and hotel pickup as well; the calendar shows each option and what it includes.

Why this one

On 7 November 2026 this was rated higher than any other Sintra and Cascais day trip on GetYourGuide with more than 10,000 reviews: 4.8 from about 12,600. Its nearest twin, Lisbon: Sintra, Pena, Regaleira & Cabo Roca & Cascais Coast, costs the same 24.20 euros and has twice the reviews, about 24,900, but rates 4.7, runs 9.5 to 10 hours, and its listing shows Cascais only as a panorama from the coach. This one gives you time in Cascais itself, offers hotel pickup and a private option, and is half an hour or more shorter. If you would rather have everything paid for in one price, Lisbon: Sintra, Pena, Cascais & Cabo Day Tour With Tickets is a small-group day rated 4.9 from about 2,000 reviews, from 68 euros, with the tickets included. If you want Sintra alone and an earlier finish, From Lisbon: Sintra, Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira takes 8 hours, rated 4.7 from about 2,600, from 35.20 euros.

You can also do Sintra without a tour. Trains run from Rossio station to Sintra in 40 minutes, 5.10 euros return, and Scotturb's 434 bus climbs to Pena; CP's 14 euro Train & Bus day ticket covers both (our Lisbon notes have the timetable). Add the two adult tickets, 40 euros, and the do-it-yourself day costs more than the cheapest tour option, takes more planning, and leaves out Cabo da Roca and Cascais. It is the better choice for anyone who wants a slow day in Sintra with the palace interiors. For a coast day without the palaces, see our Arrábida and Sesimbra day trip (from 75 euros); for a shorter outing in town, our guided Belém and Jerónimos Monastery tour (from 49.56 euros).

Good for

  • First-time visitors who want Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais in one organised day
  • Travellers without a car: Pena is closed to private vehicles and the coast is hard by train
  • Anyone who wants a guide in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian or German

Not for

  • Anyone who wants to see Pena Palace slowly, with the private apartments
  • Travellers who dislike crowds: Pena and Regaleira are busy most of the year
  • Visitors with limited mobility: both sites involve steep paths and stairs

When to go

What the weather is like month by month on the Sintra hills at Pena Palace, about 450 m up, at 13:00 Lisbon time, from Open-Meteo's historical weather for 2021 to 2025. The tour runs all year; GetYourGuide's calendar shows the start times.

Temperature is the median at 13:00 at Pena, with the coolest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 13:00. Rainy days is the share of days with 1 mm of rain or more, modelled from Open-Meteo history for 2021 to 2025.

Clear views in summer, cloud the rest of the year

In the data we looked at, the sky over Pena was clear at 13:00 on 68% of days in July and 70% in August, but on only 23% to 36% of days from November to March, when the Sintra hills are often in cloud and 33% to 44% of days bring rain. Summer is also the busiest season, and Parques de Sintra closes the hilltop monuments on days of very high rural fire risk, as it did in 2025. For the views, go from May to September; for fewer people, go from November to March and pack a waterproof.

From our Lisbon hotels

Times are routed to GetYourGuide's map pin for the start, beside Rossio station between Rossio and Restauradores; the exact meeting point is on the booking confirmation. The listing offers hotel pickup as an option, but we could not read which areas it covers, so every hotel shows as make your own way. From our eight hotels within about 25 minutes' walk the times are walks, routed on OpenStreetMap; from the others they are free-road taxi times, routed by OSRM on OpenStreetMap. Restauradores, on the Metro's blue line, and Rossio, on the green line, are a few minutes away.

Complaints

    The catch

    1. Pick the option with tickets, or buy them direct

The from price of 24.20 euros is lower than the two official adult tickets together: 20 euros for the Pena Essential Visit and 20 euros for Quinta da Regaleira on 7 November 2026.

What to do. In the calendar, choose an option that names Pena and Regaleira entry. If you buy your own, use parquesdesintra.pt and regaleira.byblueticket.pt, the official sellers, and match the times to the tour.

    2. Pena runs on a timed slot

Parques de Sintra admits visitors to Pena Palace only at the time on the ticket, and the tour's order of stops follows that slot.

What to do. Read the voucher the night before for the start time and the order of the day, and be at the meeting point early.

    3. Wear shoes for hills and stairs

Pena sits on the summit and is closed to private vehicles, and the Initiation Well at Regaleira is a nine-storey spiral staircase in the rock.

What to do. Wear comfortable shoes with grip, and anyone with limited mobility should ask the operator before booking.

    4. Bring a layer for the hills and the cape

In 2021 to 2025 the midday temperature at Pena was a median 12.2°C in January and 15.5°C in November, cooler than Lisbon, and Cabo da Roca stands on open cliffs above the Atlantic.

What to do. Take a jacket in every season and a waterproof from October to April.

    5. The hills can close at short notice

Parques de Sintra has closed the Pena park for strong winds, as on 16 December 2025, and the hilltop monuments on days of very high rural fire risk in summer.

What to do. Check the notices on parquesdesintra.pt the day before, and ask the operator what replaces a closed stop.

    6. Book ahead in summer

Sintra is busiest in the summer months, timed palace slots can sell out, and Sintra Council runs a special traffic plan for the old town.

What to do. Book a few days ahead from June to September, and pick a weekday if you can.

    Questions people ask

Good questions about Sintra, Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais in a day

Are Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira tickets included?

Not at the lowest price. The tour starts at 24.20 euros on GetYourGuide (7 November 2026), while the official adult tickets cost 20 euros each, so check that the option you choose names both tickets, or buy them yourself.

How much are Pena Palace tickets?

On 7 November 2026 Parques de Sintra charged 20 euros for an adult Essential Visit (New Wing, terraces and park), 45 euros for the Complete Visit and 12 euros for the park alone. Youths 6 to 17 and seniors over 65 pay 18 euros for the Essential Visit.

Do you need a time slot for Pena Palace?

Yes. Parques de Sintra sells palace tickets for a specific date and time, and you enter the palace only at that time. Slots can sell out in busy periods.

How much is Quinta da Regaleira?

Adults 18 to 64 pay 20 euros, youths and seniors 15 euros, and children up to 5 go free (prices valid from January 2026). Tickets are timed, with up to an hour's grace, and the only official online seller is regaleira.byblueticket.pt.

Can you do Sintra by train from Lisbon instead?

Yes. Trains from Rossio reach Sintra in 40 minutes for 5.10 euros return, and Scotturb's 434 bus goes up to Pena. A train day does not easily take in Cabo da Roca and Cascais as well.

Is Sintra worth visiting in winter?

Yes, with fewer people, but the hills are often in cloud: in 2021 to 2025 the sky at Pena was clear at midday on only about a third of days from November to March. Bring a waterproof.

Does the Sintra and Cascais tour pick up from hotels?

GetYourGuide shows pickup as available for this tour. Choose the pickup option in the calendar and check that your hotel is covered; otherwise the tour starts in central Lisbon by Rossio station.
