Belém is where Lisbon's Age of Discoveries is written in stone, about 7 km west of the centre on the Tagus. This walk takes about 3 hours. The operator, Portugal, Me & You, says it starts at the Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline architecture, and that with the ticket included the group goes into the two-storey cloister. GetYourGuide's listing adds the tomb of Vasco da Gama, which lies in the monastery church. Start times on the operator's own site on 7 November 2026 were 09:30, 10:00 and 14:00, with the 09:30 departure sold as skip-the-line and in English.

From the monastery it is a short walk to Pastéis de Belém, where the tour stops for a warm custard tart. The bakery says it has made them since 1837 from an old recipe of the Jerónimos Monastery, and it opens every day. The walk then crosses to the river for the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the Monument to the Discoveries, where the guide tells the story of Prince Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and the caravels that left from this shore. The Belém Tower is a paid add-on on the operator's site, with an 11:00 visit, and a sunset boat trip can be added to the 14:00 tour.

The context matters because the buildings are the point. The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém, given to the Order of Saint Jerome, and the Belém Tower have been National Monuments since 1907 and on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1983, according to the monument's official site. A guide turns the carvings of ropes, sea creatures and armillary spheres into the story of how the spice trade paid for them.

On 7 November 2026 the tour cost from 49.56 euros on GetYourGuide, down from 59 euros, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before and booking at least 10 hours ahead. The operator's own price that day was 59 euros for an adult. A private option is listed too. The official monastery ticket on its own is 18 euros, so the tour costs about 31.56 euros more than going in alone, for the guide, the pastry and a ticket you do not have to hunt for.

Why this one

On 7 November 2026 this was the most reviewed guided Belém walk with the monastery ticket that we found on GetYourGuide: rated 4.9 from about 1,300 reviews, from 49.56 euros. It is the one we would book for a first visit, because it solves the monastery's real problem. The official site says tickets often sell out and cannot be bought on the day, and this tour brings the ticket with it.

The rivals suit other people. Lisbon: Belem Walking Tour with Jeronimos Monastery Entry is also rated 4.9, from about 300 reviews, for 3 to 3.5 hours from 61.03 euros. Lisbon: Belem Walking Tour with Jeronimos Monastery Ticket, rated 4.7 from about 660, runs 3 hours from 53.20 euros and finishes at the Belém Tower. If you would rather go at your own pace, the official ticket is 18 euros (Lisbon: Jerónimos Monastery Entrance Ticket on GetYourGuide sells it for 18 euros, rated 4.2 from about 16,500), but book ahead. To bake the tarts rather than just eat one, see our pastel de nata baking class (from 55 euros), a short taxi ride from Belém; for a day out of the city, our Sintra, Pena, Regaleira and Cascais day trip (from 24.20 euros). Our guide to Lisbon's hotels is at /lisbon/.

Good for

  • First-timers who want Belém explained in one morning or afternoon
  • Anyone who has found the monastery sold out and needs a ticket
  • History lovers curious about Vasco da Gama and the voyages

Not for

  • Visiting on a Monday, when the monastery is closed
  • Travellers on a tight budget: the 18-euro ticket alone is cheaper
  • Anyone who wants to go inside the Belém Tower without the add-on

Temperature is the median at 12:00, with the coolest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 12:00. Rainy days is the share of days with 1 mm of rain or more, modelled from Open-Meteo history for 2021 to 2025.

Winter means showers, summer means sun

In the data we looked at, about one day in three had rain from October to April, against 2% in July and 1% in August. In July and August the median at noon was over 27°C, with clear skies on about three days in four, and the square in front of the monastery has little shade. In summer, take the 09:30 or 10:00 start; in winter, pack an umbrella.

From our Lisbon hotels

Times are free-road taxi times, routed by OSRM on OpenStreetMap, from each hotel in our Lisbon edit to the meeting point by the Museu de Marinha on Praça do Império, next to the monastery; hotel pickup is not included. Belém has no metro station: the 15E tram runs there from Praça da Figueira, and the Cascais line train reaches Belém station in 8 minutes from Cais do Sodré.

Complaints

    The catch

    1. Do not book a Monday

The official site says the monastery is closed every Monday, and on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December. It can also close for state occasions.

What to do. Pick a Tuesday to Sunday date, and check the date against those holidays before you book.

    2. Take the morning start in summer

In July and August the median at noon in Belém was over 27°C in the data we looked at, and most of the walk is outside.

What to do. Book 09:30 or 10:00, wear a hat and carry water.

    3. The tower costs extra

The Belém Tower is an add-on on the operator's site, with an 11:00 visit, and its own ticket is 15 euros at the monument. The standard tour ends at the Monument to the Discoveries.

What to do. If going inside the tower matters, choose the add-on when you book, or buy a tower ticket online for later the same day.

    4. The church keeps its own hours

The official site gives the church shorter hours than the cloister: 10:30 to 17:00 Tuesday to Saturday, and 14:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and religious holidays.

What to do. On a Sunday, the 14:00 start is the one that fits the church.

    5. Find the guide by the Museu de Marinha

Praça do Império is a large square, and the meeting point is by the café of the Museu de Marinha, beside the monastery.

What to do. Arrive 10 minutes early and follow the directions on your voucher; from Belém station it is a short walk.

    Questions people ask

Good questions about Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery with a guide

Is the Jerónimos Monastery ticket included?

Yes. The operator says the tour includes the monastery ticket and a visit to the cloister. The official ticket costs 18 euros on its own.

Is the Jerónimos Monastery open on Mondays?

No. The official site says the monastery is closed on Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December. From Tuesday to Sunday the cloister opens 09:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00.

Can I buy a Jerónimos ticket on the day?

Not reliably. The official site advises buying online in advance, because tickets often sell out and cannot be bought on the day. A tour with the ticket included avoids that.

Does the tour go inside the Belém Tower?

Not as standard. On the operator's site the Belém Tower is a paid add-on with an 11:00 visit. The tower opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30 to 17:30, and its own ticket is 15 euros.

Yes. The tour stops at Pastéis de Belém, the bakery that says it has made the tarts since 1837 from an old recipe of the Jerónimos Monastery.

How long is the Belém and Jerónimos tour?

    About 3 hours, starting at 09:30, 10:00 or 14:00 on the operator's site on 7 November 2026.

How do I get to Belém from central Lisbon?

Take the 15E tram from Praça da Figueira, or the Cascais line train from Cais do Sodré to Belém, 8 minutes. A taxi from our hotels took 8 to 11 minutes in free-road routing.
