Diving on the Moon runs the walk from an office on Paseo Tarajal, above Playa de Las Vistas, on the stretch of seafront between Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. The operator's own breakdown is 30 minutes of briefing and fitting, 20 to 25 minutes in the water, and up to 30 minutes afterwards to change and see the photographs: an hour and a half in all, though GetYourGuide's summary says an hour.
The helmet is a Sea Trek, a system made by the American company Sub Sea Systems. Air is pumped from the surface into the helmet, which rests on the shoulders; the air stays inside the way it stays in an upturned glass held underwater, so the head stays dry and you breathe normally. There is no mouthpiece, and the operator says glasses, make-up and piercings can stay on. Its guides take groups of up to four down to 5 metres, among volcanic rock and fish. The wetsuit is included.
No swimming or diving experience is needed, and the operator says non-swimmers and people with limited mobility are welcome. It is not for children under 8, for pregnancy, or for anyone with heart or breathing disease, epilepsy or recent surgery, and everyone signs a health declaration first.
The bay is listed by the IUCN's Shark Specialist Group as an Important Shark and Ray Area, for the smoothhound sharks and eagle rays recorded around Los Cristianos. None of them is promised at 5 metres: the operator's own description is fish and rock, and that is what guests describe.
Why this one
We found no one else selling a Sea Trek helmet walk on Tenerife, so the real comparison is with other ways of being underwater without a diving certificate. The Submarine Safaris submarine from Amarilla Marina, further east along the south coast, dives to about 30 metres with passengers seated behind windows; it was rated 4.8 from 2,582 reviews on GetYourGuide, from 61 euros. It is cheaper and deeper, but you look out rather than stand on the seabed. A try-dive with a dive school is real scuba, with a mask and a mouthpiece, for anyone who wants a first lesson rather than a walk.
This one was rated 4.9 from about 450 reviews on GetYourGuide, from 85 euros, and 5.0 from 167 reviews on Tripadvisor. Book it to stand on the seabed and breathe normally with a dry head, glasses on if you need them. Of our other pages, the no-chase whale catamaran looks below the waterline through windows for 28 euros, with no swimming at all. The operator does not publish its own price to compare with GetYourGuide's.
Good for
- Non-swimmers and nervous swimmers who want to see under the sea
- Families with children of 8 or over on the south coast
- Anyone who wears glasses and finds a mask awkward
Not for
- Children under 8, or anyone who is pregnant
- Certified divers after a real dive
- Anyone hoping for colourful coral: this is fish and volcanic rock

What guests keep saying
Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.
Praised
- Patient guides who make nervous swimmers and non-swimmers feel at ease
- Breathing normally on the seabed surprises people who expected it to feel strange
- Small groups, so each guest gets time and attention
- The underwater photos, for the quality and the price
Complaints
- Complaints are rare; the one we found called the scenery modest, fish and a couple of rocks
The catch
It takes 90 minutes, not an hour
GetYourGuide's summary gives the duration as one hour. The operator's own breakdown is 30 minutes of preparation, 20 to 25 minutes in the water and up to 30 minutes to change and see the photos.
What to do. Allow an hour and a half, and do not book anything tight straight afterwards.
The photos are extra
The guides photograph and film each group underwater, and the package costs 25 euros per couple on top of the ticket. The photos are the souvenir most guests mention.
What to do. Decide before you go in whether you want them, or budget the 25 euros.
Rough sea cancels it, most often in March
The operator reschedules or refunds when the sea or the weather makes it unsafe. In the four years of sea data we looked at, the waves off Las Vistas stayed under 1.5 metres on only about half the days in March, against about nine days in ten from May to September.
What to do. Outside the summer, book early in your stay so a rough day leaves time to rebook.
The legal address is not the meeting point
The operator's legal address is on Paseo Aquilino in Los Cristianos, about 1.25 kilometres from Paseo Tarajal 340, where the walk starts. Booked direct, its pages also disagree on the refund window: 24 hours on the main page, 48 in the general conditions.
What to do. Go by the meeting point and directions on your ticket, not a search for the company's address.
Not for everyone's health
Children under 8, pregnant women and anyone with heart or breathing disease, epilepsy or recent surgery are excluded, and you equalise your ears as the pressure rises, as in any dive.
What to do. If you have a condition that might count, ask the operator before booking, not at the desk.
