The catch at Barceló Playa Blanca

Five things stand between the pool photographs and the stay. None of them is hidden, and none outweighs a new resort built around a vast, winding infinity pool that looks across the strait to Fuerteventura, but each one decides whether it suits you.

On our shortlists

  1. With 720 rooms, this is the largest hotel on the island, and you walk across it

Barceló Playa Blanca has 720 rooms on a 100,000 m² seafront plot: 588 in the main hotel and 132 in the Royal Level, its adults-only section. The low buildings spread out across the gardens, so the walk from a far wing to the buffet, the pool or the car park takes a few minutes, and guests in 2026 keep mentioning the size of the complex. An entertainment team runs a programme for children and adults by day and by night, and every guest wears an identification wristband for the whole stay. The restaurants and bars open depending on occupancy and the season: KOI, the Japanese restaurant, was temporarily closed in October 2026.

What to do. When you book, ask for a room close to the main building if long walks matter to you. On arrival, ask which restaurants are open during your stay and book México Lindo then.

  2. The resort faces the sea but is not on the sand: Playa Dorada is 13 minutes on foot

Between the pools and the water lie a lawn, a row of pergola terraces and the public seafront promenade, so the ocean is the backdrop rather than the edge. Playa Dorada, the nearest beach, is a sheltered strip of pale sand about 350 m long, 13 minutes on foot from the main entrance. The Papagayo beaches, in the Los Ajaches natural area east of Playa Blanca, are 11 to 14 minutes by car. Sunbeds and parasols line the pool deck, and guests keep remarking on how easy it is to find a lounger, so most days here are spent by the pool rather than on the beach.

What to do. Walk to Playa Dorada along the promenade for a morning swim, and drive to Papagayo for a beach day. Book the Superior Sea Front if you want the sea in view from the room.

  3. Only part of the main pool is heated, and the water can feel cool outside summer

The main infinity pool winds some 140 metres from the main building down through the gardens, and only part of it is heated; the hotel does not say which part, or to what temperature. The children's pool is heated, as are the semi-private pools of the swim-up rooms and the Royal Level's own infinity pool. Even so, outside summer the unheated stretches of the main pool can feel cool. The warm pool that is certain is the 32°C hydrotherapy pool in the Wellness Centre, and the Wellness Centre costs extra.

What to do. On a winter stay, ask at the pool which section is heated on your first morning, and budget for the Wellness Centre circuit if a warm swim matters to you.

  4. Breakfast is in every rate, but drinks, the spa, the courts and parking are not

No room-only rate is sold: every booking includes the buffet breakfast, and half board adds the buffet dinner. Drinks are not included on bed and breakfast or half board; the all-inclusive adds the lunch buffet, drinks and a selection of drinks and snacks at the pool bars. The Wellness Centre, with its 32°C pool, Finnish sauna, steam room and five treatment rooms, costs extra, and so does the sports centre, with two padel courts, a pickleball court and a multi-sports court; only the gym, which looks over the sea, is free. Parking at the main hotel is paid, at a price the hotel does not publish, and room service and airport transfers are charged too.

What to do. Price half board before you book: on Tuesday 8 June 2027 it was €9 a night more than bed and breakfast for two in the entry room, and all-inclusive €84 more. If you are hiring a car, ask the parking price when you book.

  5. New Year costs nearly twice June, and November, February, Holy Week and August are dearer too

The cheapest room with breakfast, one night for two on the non-refundable rate, was €184 on Tuesday 8 June 2027 and the same on 11 May. On 12 January 2027 it was €200, on 16 February and on 23 March, in Holy Week, €221, on 10 August €230 and on 17 November 2026 €224. On 29 December 2026 the entry Superior was not on sale at all, and the cheapest room left, a Superior Side Sea View, was €386, against €208 for the same room in June. The sea-view rooms move most: the Superior Sea Front was €246 in June and €346 in November.

What to do. Come in May or June for the lowest rates. For winter sun, January was the cheapest of the winter dates sampled; for New Year, book early and expect to start at a sea-view room.

Who should skip it

Anyone who wants sand outside the door, a small hotel or a warm pool every day of a winter week without paying for the spa. Also anyone who wants every drink in the rate without paying for all-inclusive.

Who should book it anyway

Families and couples who want a pool week in the sun at a resort that opened in December 2023. The main pool winds some 140 metres down through the gardens with Fuerteventura beyond its far edge; children get a heated pool with a pirate ship and slides; adults can book the Royal Level for a pool, a bar and a buffet of their own; and Marina Rubicón's restaurants are along the promenade. In June a room with breakfast is €184 for two. Book a Superior Sea Front for the view, come in May or June, and keep the beach for a morning walk.

Car hire in Lanzarote

The seafront promenade runs past the door and Marina Rubicón is 13 minutes on foot, but the Timanfaya visitor centre is 31 minutes by car and Teguise 45, so a car earns its keep on days out; the car park is paid, and free for Royal Level guests when spaces allow.

Our verdict

A new pool resort with the strait as its backdrop, and an adults-only hotel inside it. Check availability for the Superior Sea Front, or the Royal Level if you want a quieter pool.
