The catch at Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote

Five things stand between the photographs and the stay. None of them takes anything away from Manrique's gardens, murals and lagoon pool, which are the reason to come, but each one decides which room to book, which nights to eat where, and whether this is the right week for you.

On our shortlists

  1. Everyone is on all-inclusive, and the three à la carte dinners have to be booked.

All-inclusive is the only board. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at Malva Food Bazaar, the buffet on the terrace by the pool. The alternatives are three à la carte restaurants, and each needs a booking for dinner and opens for it only on some nights of the week: La Graciosa, for fish and island cooking; Samira, the Middle Eastern signature restaurant; and Cappella, the Italian. Which nights each one opens changes with the season. Dinner at all three, and at the buffet, ends at 9.30pm, so evenings end early. Drinks at the Beach Bar are not part of the all-inclusive.

What to do. Book your à la carte nights on the first day, around each restaurant's closing nights. La Graciosa also serves lunch every day from 12.30pm. Rooms in The Reserve come with priority reservations.

  2. The lagoon pool is the busy one.

Manrique's lagoon pool is the heart of the resort: 1,800 m² of seawater curling between basalt, plants and whitewashed walls, with The Shack serving drinks and light lunches beside it through the day. Being the pool almost everyone uses, it is also the one that fills up at the busiest times of day. The quieter pool, with its own bar, belongs to The Reserve, the hotel within the hotel, and the Reserve's garden villas have pools of their own. Bali beds cost extra.

What to do. If long pool days are the point of the trip, price a room in The Reserve for its private pool and bar. Otherwise come for the setting and swim in the morning.

  3. The entry rooms are simpler than the building.

The Premium rooms that most guests book are 32 m², with a rain shower, a free minibar of local products, an espresso machine and a terrace over the gardens. They are comfortable and modern, but plainer than the building around them, and they are the same size from the entry Premium Room to the sea-facing Premium Ocean Front, so the money buys an outlook, not space. Only the suites and the rooms of The Reserve add a lounge, a bath or a whirlpool.

What to do. Spend the difference on the view. The Premium Ocean Front puts the Atlantic in sight from the bed, and on 8 to 12 June 2027 it cost €67 a night more than the Premium Room.

  4. Costa Teguise is the windy side of the island.

The resort faces the Atlantic on Lanzarote's east coast, which takes the trade wind head on. Playa de las Cucharas, which begins 3 minutes' walk along the front, is a beach of fine golden sand with lifeguards and a promenade, and it is one of the island's windsurfing beaches for exactly that reason. It is a windy beach, which suits sailboards better than a day on a towel. The resort's own shelter is its gardens and terraces, not a bay. The cafés and shops of the Pueblo Marinero are 15 minutes away on foot.

What to do. For a calm beach day, drive to the Papagayo beaches in the south, 51 minutes away. Keep Costa Teguise for walks along the front and the windsurf school.

  5. Some dates need four nights, and the extras sit outside the all-inclusive.

In June 2027 the shortest stay on sale is four nights. Rates are lowest in May, June and the autumn and highest at Christmas, New Year, in February and at Easter, when the island's winter sun is the draw. The all-inclusive covers meals and drinks, but several things are charged on top: drinks at the Beach Bar, Bali beds, spa treatments, the airport transfer and parking, both outdoor and private, for which the hotel publishes no daily price. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out by noon.

What to do. Plan on four nights or more, and ask the price of parking before you hire a car. The suites and villas of The Reserve include parking.

Who should skip it

Families with children under 16, since the resort is for adults only. Also anyone who wants to eat somewhere different every night, dine after 9.30pm, find a lively scene after dark or have sheltered sand at the door: this is a quiet resort on the windy coast, built around its own restaurants.

Who should book it anyway

Anyone for whom architecture and gardens matter more than a nightlife. Fernando Higueras's terraced concrete building and César Manrique's water garden under the octagon, his murals and his 1,800 m² seawater lagoon pool are the setting for every day of the stay, not a stop on a tour, and the hotel runs its own guided tour of them for guests. Book a Premium Ocean Front for the sea from the bed, plan the à la carte nights on arrival, drive out to Manrique's other works on the island, and the catches above stop mattering.

Our verdict

A hotel where Manrique's gardens are the setting for the whole week, not a day trip. Check availability for a Premium Ocean Front room.
