What we looked for

A beach week in Lanzarote is decided by the coast you pick. The sheltered south and south-east have the calm, sandy beaches: Puerto del Carmen's golden Playa Grande, 1,190 metres long with lifeguards and sunbeds, and Playa Dorada's 350 metres of fine white sand in Playa Blanca, both marked free of wind by the tourist board. The east coast at Costa Teguise catches the trade wind, which is why Las Cucharas is a windsurfing beach. Beyond Playa Blanca, the Papagayo coves are white sand and calm water, 12 minutes by road and €3 a car at the gate, by card.

In Spain every beach is public by law, so no hotel here has a private one; what they have is the sand at the garden gate, or a pool good enough to be the point. Choose Fariones or Princesa Yaiza to walk onto the beach, Barceló Playa Blanca or Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote to spend the week by the water at the hotel.

Hotel Fariones

Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Hotel Fariones, Lanzarote's first beach hotel, has stood on the point at the western end of Playa Grande since 1966. The golden sand is a minute from the door and stretches east for about a kilometre, with lifeguards and sunbeds, and there is a little golden-sand cove right below the gardens. Playa Chica is a five-minute walk to the west.

All 213 rooms are sold as sea-view rooms, each with its own terrace, so the Atlantic is the first thing you see in the morning. Between swims, the infinity pool sits among palms more than forty years old, with La Barra's terrace in front of it for lunch and cocktails, and suite guests have a rooftop pool looking across to Fuerteventura and Lobos. Plan on a week: outside July and August most rooms need four nights or more.

Barceló Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Barceló Playa Blanca is here for the pool. It took its first guests in December 2023, on the seafront between Playa Dorada and Marina Rubicón, and it is built around a winding infinity pool about 140 metres end to end, with the strait and Fuerteventura beyond it. Sunbeds, parasols and towels are included, and guests often say a lounger is easy to find.

Part of the main pool is heated, as are the children's pool with its pirate ship and slides, the semi-private pools of the swim-up rooms and the Royal Level's own infinity pool for adults. For sand, Playa Dorada's calm water is 13 minutes' walk along the seafront promenade, and the white-sand Papagayo coves are 11 to 14 minutes by car. Book it for a week of pool days with the strait in view, and a morning walk to the beach.

Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort is the one where the garden gate opens onto the beach. Playa Dorada is 350 metres of fine white sand, its water kept calm by a curve of rock, with sunbeds and parasols for hire, showers, and Lobos and Fuerteventura across the strait. The tourist board marks it free of wind, which on Lanzarote matters.

Back in the gardens are six outdoor pools, the children's ones in Capitan Park among them, and by the sea a 2,000 m² thalasso whose 34°C seawater circuit is for over-16s. The Papagayo coves are 12 to 15 minutes by car for a day on the white sand of Los Ajaches. It suits a family or a couple who want to walk from breakfast to the water without moving the car all week.

Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote: Manrique's lagoon pool between the palms and the seaThe design one

4 / 4

Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote

Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote is a pool hotel of a rare kind. Its centrepiece is César Manrique's 1,800 m² seawater lagoon, winding between basalt, planting and white walls, with The Shack beside it for drinks and light lunches. The gardens open straight onto the shore, and Playa de las Cucharas, 640 metres of fine golden sand with lifeguards and a promenade, begins 3 minutes' walk along the front.

Costa Teguise is the windy east coast, and Las Cucharas is one of the windsurfers' favourite beaches: the water is calm, but the breeze is real. Spend the beach hours in the lagoon and the gardens, and drive to the Papagayo coves for a still day on the sand. Guests in The Reserve, the hotel within the hotel, have a quieter pool with its own bar.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Lanzarote

Do any hotels in Lanzarote have a private beach?

No. In Spain every beach is public by law, so the question is how close the sand is. Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort's gardens give straight onto Playa Dorada, and Hotel Fariones stands on the point at the western end of Playa Grande, a minute from the sand, with a small sandy cove below its gardens. Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote's gardens open onto the shore, with Playa de las Cucharas 3 minutes' walk away. From Barceló Playa Blanca, Playa Dorada is 13 minutes on foot.

Which beaches in Lanzarote are calm and sheltered from the wind?

The south and south-east coasts. The tourist board marks Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo in Playa Blanca free of wind, all with calm water; that is where Hotel Fariones, Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort and Barceló Playa Blanca are. The Papagayo coves east of Playa Blanca are white sand and calm water too. On the east coast, Las Cucharas at Costa Teguise has calm water and lifeguards but is marked windy, which is why the windsurfers like it.

Are Lanzarote's resort beaches sand or volcanic rock?

The main resort beaches are sand. Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen is golden sand, Playa Dorada in Playa Blanca fine white sand, Las Cucharas at Costa Teguise fine golden sand and the Papagayo coves white sand. Rocky and pebbly shores are elsewhere: Playa Quemada, west of Puerto Calero, is pebbles. For sand a minute or less from the door, Hotel Fariones and Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort, and in Arrecife Hotel Lancelot, across the promenade from Playa del Reducto.

Is Lanzarote warm enough for a beach holiday in winter?

For sun, yes. AEMET's normals give Lanzarote Airport an average high of 20.7°C (69°F) in January and a low of 14.0°C (57°F), with 203 hours of sun that month and 111 mm of rain in a whole year. Pools can feel cool outside summer, so a heated one helps: at Barceló Playa Blanca part of the main pool is heated, and so are the children's pool, the swim-up pools and the Royal Level's infinity pool. Princesa Yaiza's thalasso has a 34°C seawater circuit for over-16s.

How far are the Papagayo beaches from the hotels?

Closest from Playa Blanca: about 11 to 14 minutes by car from Barceló Playa Blanca and 12 to 15 from Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort, off-peak. From Hotel Fariones in Puerto del Carmen it is about 38 minutes, and from Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote in Costa Teguise about 51. The coves lie in the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches, where non-residents pay €3 a car at the entrance, by card only.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
