The catch at Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia
Five things stand between the photographs and the stay. None of them is hidden, and none of them stops this being a fine, quiet five-star, but each one decides whether it is the right week for you.
On our shortlists
No room faces the sea, and the cheapest one sits by the entrance.
All 94 rooms and suites are in two-storey villas around the gardens and the pool, each with a screened balcony or terrace, and no category is sold with a sea or dune view. The entry Twin Room, about 33 m², is placed at the entrance with a garden view. The Superior Room's dunes side describes where the room sits, not what it looks at. The best outlook the hotel sells is the palm-lined pool, from the Deluxe Room, and on Tuesday 8 June 2027 that was €691 a night for two with breakfast, against €507 for the Twin Room. The sea is a walk away: 8 minutes on foot to the sand of Playa de Maspalomas by the Charca lagoon, with beach bags, towels and water from reception.
What to do. Book the Deluxe Room if the outlook matters, and think of the beach as an eight-minute stroll rather than a view.
In high season the hotel sells weeks, not long weekends.
Minimum stays depend on the dates, and in high season the hotel usually asks for a week. It publishes no dates, but high season here is winter, when the sun is the reason to come, and winter is when the rates are highest, above all in February, at Christmas and New Year and at Easter. A four-night break in the depths of winter may not be bookable at all. Outside winter the rule relaxes: Tuesday 8 June 2027 was on sale as a single night. The clock is strict at both ends of a stay, too. Check-in is at 3pm and check-out at noon, and an early arrival or a late departure is guaranteed only by paying for an extra night, though there is a changing room on arrival and a courtesy room with a shower for late flights.
What to do. Plan a winter stay as a week and fix the dates before anything else. For a short break, come in late spring or summer, when single nights are sold and the rates are lowest.
Evenings are dressed, quiet and early.
Dinner runs from 6.30pm to 10pm in winter and from 7pm to 10pm in summer, and the code is casual elegant: long trousers and closed shoes for men, no shorts, and no sportswear or trainers in the evening. The pool closes at 9pm, live music on the Piano Bar terrace stops at 11pm and the bar itself at midnight, and the hotel asks for quiet in the public areas from 10.30pm to 7am. Guests are asked not to use mobile phones at the pool, the pool bar or the restaurant. The crowd is mostly older and very quiet, which for most of them is the point of the place. Anyone hoping for a late night, or a pool with music, will find neither here.
What to do. Pack long trousers and closed shoes. For a later drink, the Bar Salón at the Seaside Palm Beach, six minutes' walk, stays open until 1am with live music seven nights a week.
Children are welcome, but the kids' club is at the hotel next door.
There is a small baby pool beside the main pool, and the hotel provides cots, sterilisers and baby phones, with a babysitter on request, but it has no other children's facilities on site. The kids' club, a children's pool and a small playground belong to the sister hotel, the Seaside Palm Beach, six minutes' walk away, and guests here may use them; its Pepe's Club takes children from 4 to 12. The sauna area is closed to under-14s, the main pool runs from 0.80 to 1.80 m deep with parents asked to supervise, and the quiet hours apply to everyone. A family can stay comfortably; it will just not find the day built around children.
What to do. If the club will be used every day, the Seaside Palm Beach, also in this edit, puts it at your own door. With a baby, ask for a ground-floor room near the pool and book the babysitter at reception.
Breakfast is usually in the rate; the drinks, extras and treatments are not.
The rates priced for June 2027 include breakfast, and half board is also sold, so the meals can be settled before arrival. What sits outside the rate is priced as a Gran Lujo hotel prices it. Wine by the glass at dinner runs from €10 to €17, room service carries a €6 fee on top of the order, and the private airport transfer starts at €54 each way. The spa's thalasso pool, sauna, steam room, salt cave and gym are free to use, but treatments are extra and charged in full if cancelled less than 8 hours ahead, and the sauna area opens only from 4pm to 8pm. The price of drinks and extras is one of the few things guests complain about here.
What to do. Choose the board when you book, budget for the bar as you would at a city five-star, and book treatments ahead with the 8-hour rule in mind.
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants the sea from the bed, a long weekend in winter, a kids' club at the door or a pool with music. Also anyone who wants to dine late or in shorts: dinner ends at 10pm and asks for long trousers.
Who should book it anyway
Couples who want a week of winter sun done quietly and very well. The villas sit in the palm grove of the Maspalomas oasis, rooms are made up twice a day, the heated saltwater pool has a lounger for everyone, the spa's pools and saunas cost nothing, and dinner comes from a kitchen that holds a Repsol Sol, with no table to book. Take a Deluxe Room on the pool, walk eight minutes to the dunes, and the catches above stop mattering.
