What we looked for

Lanzarote is an island of short drives, and most of its sights, from Timanfaya to the Jameos del Agua, need a car. But a week can run happily on foot if you choose the base well. Without a car, Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife are the bases: Puerto del Carmen strings its restaurants along the Avenida de las Playas above golden beaches, and Arrecife is a working capital with its own town beach and a lagoon ringed with bars. Playa Blanca works too, with a seafront promenade linking its beaches and a town bus every half hour.

The inland houses, at La Geria, Teguise and Haría, need a car. On the coast, the island buses take a bank card or cash, and line 161 runs from the airport to Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Pick the hotel by what you want at the end of the walk: a town, a beach or the harbour.

Hotel Lancelot

Arrecife, Lanzarote

Hotel Lancelot is our hotel in Arrecife, the island's capital, and the town starts at its door. Playa del Reducto, Arrecife's sandy beach, is across a pedestrian promenade, about a minute away. Walk along the seafront and El Almacén, César Manrique's arts centre, comes up at seven minutes, the church of San Ginés and the Puente de las Bolas at 13, and the Charco de San Ginés, the lagoon of the old fishing quarter, at 16.

Dinner needs no planning: six good places are within seven minutes on foot, from a fish tavern to a French pâtisserie and a café on a Manrique islet off the beach. Getting here is easy too. The airport is seven minutes by car, and airport bus lines 22 and 23 stop at Gran Hotel, about 110 metres from the door. Hire a car only for the days you head to Timanfaya.

Hotel Fariones

Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

Hotel Fariones stands on the point at the western end of Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen, and it is built for life on foot. The golden sand starts a minute from the door, a small sandy cove sits below the gardens, and Playa Chica is five minutes west. El Varadero, the old harbour quarter with its fish restaurants, is nine minutes along the front, and the harbour itself 13.

A wine bar and a steakhouse are two minutes away in the square behind the hotel, and Puerto del Carmen's seafront walk runs east from the door to Playa de los Pocillos, 3.3 km. For the airport and the rest of the island, line 161 stops at Apartamentos Caletón Blanco, three minutes' walk away, and lines 2 and 3 run to Arrecife and Costa Teguise. A taxi from the airport is 13 minutes.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Lanzarote

Can you stay in Lanzarote without a car?

Yes, in Puerto del Carmen or Arrecife, and Playa Blanca works too. Hotel Fariones has Playa Grande a minute away and line 161 to the airport three minutes' walk from the door. Hotel Lancelot has Playa del Reducto across the promenade and airport buses 22 and 23 about 110 metres away. Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort has the town bus every half hour. La Geria, Teguise, Haría and Timanfaya need a car.

How far is Hotel Lancelot from the Charco de San Ginés?

Sixteen minutes on foot along the seafront, about 1.2 km. On the way you pass El Almacén, César Manrique's arts centre, seven minutes from the hotel, and the church of San Ginés and the Puente de las Bolas at 13. The Charco is the lagoon of the old fishing quarter, remodelled to a César Manrique design and ringed with bars and restaurants.

Can you walk along the seafront in Puerto del Carmen?

Yes. The seafront runs from Playa de los Pocillos to Hotel Fariones, at the western end of Playa Grande, in 44 minutes, 3.3 km, and the old harbour is 13 minutes beyond the hotel. Playa Grande is 1,190 metres of golden sand with calm water and lifeguards, and the Avenida de las Playas above it has the restaurants and the evenings.

How do the buses work for visitors?

IntercityBus runs the island lines, and drivers take a bank card or cash, with change for notes up to €10. Line 161 leaves Terminal 1 at 07:30 and 08:30, then every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 16:30 and hourly to 21:30, for Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. The Bono General card costs €2 and takes 10% off each ride, and one card can pay for several people.

Are the beaches by these hotels public?

Yes. In Spain every beach is public by law, so the sand belongs to everyone, hotel guests included. Playa del Reducto in front of Hotel Lancelot is the town's own beach, sheltered by a reef. Playa Grande beside Hotel Fariones has lifeguards and sunbeds, and the gardens of Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort open onto Playa Dorada, where sunbeds and parasols are for hire.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
