What we looked for

A spa week in Lanzarote is usually a winter-sun week. January afternoons at the airport average 20.7°C, so heated pools and warm water indoors earn their place. Each of the four hotels here has a real wellness area, not just a gym with a sauna, and each works differently.

What decides it is what the rate covers. At Secrets every spa service costs extra on every board, the circuit included, with passes from an hour to the whole stay. At Princesa Yaiza the thalasso circuit is for over-16s and comes daily with the Relax rooms. Ages matter too: Secrets is for adults over 18, La Isla y el Mar and Paradisus Salinas for adults only, and Princesa Yaiza is a family resort that keeps its thalasso for grown-ups. Secrets Lanzarote Resort & Spa is built around its spa. The circuit is indoors, in a hall of stone-clad arcades: a 14 m dynamic pool, Jacuzzis, a sauna and a steam bath, invigorating showers and an ice fountain, with tea afterwards on a private terrace. Treatments use Natura Bissé across ten rooms, from couples' massages to the Volcanic Ritual with Lanzarote lava. The spa is open every day from 10:00 to 20:00, and everything is booked in the hotel's app.

Outside, four heated pools step down the terraces towards the sea, and the resort takes adults over 18 only. Every spa service is charged on top of any board: the circuit costs €30 for an hour, €70 for a day or €95 for the stay, so if you will use it on four days or more, the stay pass is the one to buy.

Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort is a family resort with a grown-up spa. Its thalasso covers 2,000 m² by the sea, with a seawater circuit at 34°C, a hammam and saunas, and the circuit is kept for guests of 16 and over, so it stays an adult space while the children are at Capitan Park.

The room decides how you get in. The Relax rooms, also for over-16s, include the circuit every day, with an à la carte breakfast at Isla de Lobos and an aromatherapy kit. On any stay of seven nights or more, one circuit per person comes with the room; otherwise you book and pay at the spa. The Suite Excellence Sea View adds a one-hour massage for each adult, and Playa Dorada's calm water is at the garden gate for a swim between sessions.

La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique is the small, quiet choice: 81 adults-only suites on the hill above Puerto del Carmen. Its wellness centre has a sauna, a hot tub and a menu of massages and treatments, with a gym and yoga on Tuesday mornings. The pool is heated all year, with a waterfall and hydromassage jets, and the pool bar serves from half past ten to six.

What sets it apart is warm water at your own door. Two kinds of suite have a private hot tub on the terrace: the Premium Suite, a 74 m² loft with a separate bath and shower, and the Suite Deluxe, 64 m² with two bedrooms and a sea view. Every suite is at least 50 m², so there is room to spread out after a treatment, and Kentia Gourmet Club's tasting menus mean dinner needs no drive.

Paradisus Salinas Lanzarote suits a slower spa week, where the setting does half the work. Its Wellness & Beauty Centre offers treatments, charged on top of the all-inclusive, and the hotel takes adults of 16 and over.

The water is the draw. Outside, César Manrique's seawater lagoon pool, 1,800 m² of it, winds through basalt and planting; inside, beneath the skylit octagon, his water garden drops in shallow steps under hanging plants. For water of your own, the Oceanfront Suite with Whirlpool has 65 m², a bath and shower and two terraces over the sea, one with an outdoor whirlpool bath. Guests of The Reserve also get a quieter pool with its own bar.
